You can desperately want your children. Love them more than you knew you could love another human. And still have moments where one more tiny hand grabbing your face, climbing on your body, pinching your skin or accidentally digging an elbow directly into your nipple makes you want to crawl out of your own skin. Both can be true. Because understanding that a behavior is developmentally normal doesn’t magically make your nervous system enjoy experiencing it. Your toddler isn’t trying to overstimulate you. They are trying to figure out their body and how it interacts with the world and with you. And that’s why it’s so important to have a framework for how to respond to those behaviors so that you can stay regulated and not get overstimulated yourself. If you love your kids deeply and sometimes cannot stand being touched by them, follow me. We talk about that here.
