Japanese artist Takesada Matsutani creates paintings, sculptures and performances centered on material, repetition, gravity and transformation. He became a member of the influential Japanese Gutai Art Association in the 1960s. In his performance Stream, presented at Hauser & Wirth London in 2013, Matsutani works with water, graphite and physical actions, allowing materials to change directly in front of the audience. Rather than completely controlling the final result, he lets gravity, pressure, time and chance participate in making the work. Water moves and spreads, while repeated gestures gradually transform the surface. This approach comes from Gutai’s radical interest in letting materials express their own properties.
