Welcome to Episode 7 of dialed in where I'm breaking down some Fujifilm concepts. Today we're talking about white balance and adjusting it in your film recipes. First off what is white balance? White balance corrects for the light's color cast so tones to render correctly. Every source of light has a color cast where candles kind of give off that warm orangey hue and more overcast skies give some blue and gray. What white balance is is the setting that corrects for the light's color cast so that it renders hues accurately. But it's not just about accuracy, it's also about mood. How warm do you want your photo or how cool do you want your photo and you're able to tweak that so that the photo renders in the way that you want it to be. Summer Chrome by itself tweaks really warm by having a really positive red swing. Tip: turn down the redness in your WB if its too warm. You can dial that back just a little bit so that the photo doesn't read off too warm. So for Summer Chrome, the white balance grid is negative 6 blue and positive 5 red. That is a lot of red and which is why your photos are reading really warm. If it's reading too warm or orange for your skin or for the scene, you can ease the shift by bringing it more to center. Something like positive 2 for red and negative 2 for blue kind of neutralizes the photo from being way too warm. Takeaway is if you really like Summer Chrome but if it's reading just a little bit too warm for you, try adjusting the white balance and making it go a little bit more to center. That way you can still have the vibe and feel of this film recipe but maybe your scenes aren't so orangey or warm. Tip: this also works with other film recipes! Small nudges like one to two clicks really go a long way. So play around with it see what you like.
