I'm gonna go out on a limb and just say it. Asters > Mums. Asters are superior to mums. I had to stop by Home Depot for some potting soil and look at what I saw. These are "believer" asters which grow into beautiful little two by two mounds. They are covered in flowers, just like a mum, but more importantly, they are covered in pollinators. Now compare that to mums. There's absolutely no activity here, not a nilch zero. And don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of the native police. I'm not a fan of mums. But if you love them, buy them. But when you look at the open-faced varieties that pollinators prefer as a food source, or buy the weird, beautiful, special variety, because sometimes we are gardening just for aesthetic value. But when there are amazing substitutes for big box store mums, at the big box store, it's a no-brainer. And don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of the native police. I'm not a fan of mums. But if you love them, buy them.
