These are 5 numbers that made me realize that we make way too much money to still be living paycheck to paycheck. Number 1, our monthly take home income. Between my husband and I, we bring home roughly $10,000 a month after taxes and benefits. And that number is exactly why it's been so embarrassing to talk about this publicly, because our problem isn't that we don't make enough money. Number 2, our mortgage. Our mortgage is almost $3200 a month. Number 3, our car payment. My car payment is $1300 a month. I know, I know. Trust me, the comments have already come for me with that one. Number 4, our non-mortgage debt. Between the credit cards, student loans, the vehicle, and anything else, we owe approximately $170,000 outside of our mortgage. Number 5, what's actually left over is probably the number that bothered me the most. How much money we actually had left over. After making decent money every single month, we basically had $300 to $500 of actual breathing room. And that's when it clicked for me. We don't have an income problem, we have a money management problem. We increased our income over the years, but we also increased the cost of our life right along with it. And now we have to figure out how to actually fix it. We're actually looking at some pretty big changes. What to do about the car, how aggressively we can attack the debt, and if some of these options actually make financial sense. I'm going to show you exactly what we decide and whether or not it works.
