When you turn it on, your phone does something counterintuitive: it actually gets stupider. It shrinks your attack surface. But the most important thing that it does is it prevents anything from plugging into your phone while it's locked, meaning there's no connection and no data transfer. The reason that matters is how government grade spyware actually works. It's not someone typing in your password, it's a link you didn't click, a file you never opened, a FaceTime call you never answered. These are called zero click attacks, and they work by exploiting the exact features that Lockdown Mode shuts off. Apple was so serious about this when they first launched it, they offered a $2 million bounty to anyone that can break it. That bounty has still not been claimed. Fast forward to January 2026, Hannah Natanson, a Washington Post journalist, had her home raided by the FBI as part of a classified investigation. The FBI's computer analysis response team, the people whose entire job is to crack phones, could not extract the data. That's because tools like Cellebrite and GrayKey, the exact software that law enforcement uses to unlock devices, came up short. And before you say, couldn't a regular passcode do the same thing? No, these tools work by plugging directly into the phone and attempting to bypass the passcode entirely. Lockdown Mode blocks that connection from taking place.
