I don’t know what it was that scared him so much that day and yes of course it hurt my heart. He seemed so fearful of me and leaving the kennel with me. So i gave it some days of very low pressure interaction, treats not looking at him saying hi to his kennel mate only etc. The staff have been doing amazing work with him daily, to see Tonka so comfortable on the pack walk was exceptional! Yesterday we were back on board of going on our walks. He was so much more comfortable walking thru the doorways and strolling on the road. Kulani is an amazing calm presence for him. This is just a reminder that it’s important to remember why we are volunteering. It’s for the dogs, their benefit. There is no benefit of me forcing interaction on a dog who so clearly was terrified. Even if i wanted to help him there are other ways and other people that he trusts too. Tonka is showing some great progress even if we have our set back days.
