This wasn't supposed to be their ending.

I am devastated to share heartbreaking news from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators confirmed that two of the dogs who were transferred to Miranda’s Rescue from Maui humane society, Oliwa and Kloe, were identified during the excavation of the property. I know that the shelter was told Oliwa had been adopted and even received an “adoption” video. There’s really nothing i can say to describe what I’m feeling and probably so many others are too. My heart goes out to every shelter and individual that trusted Miranda’s Rescue with dogs they had fought for, loved, and advocated for. When Oliwa and Kloe left Maui Humane Society, we believed they were finally getting the second chance every dog deserves. We celebrated them, told them they were going to live great lives on the mainland. We trusted they were on their way to a better life, just like so many of the dogs we have transferred over the years. Our hearts are beyond shattered. For everyone asking how this could happen, it’s important to understand why shelters like Maui Humane Society rely so heavily on rescue partners. Living on an island means our options are limited. We simply don’t have enough adopters or foster homes here for every dog who needs them. Transfer partners give dogs the opportunity to reach communities where they have a much greater chance of finding loving, permanent homes. I have personally watched hundreds of dogs leave Maui through transfer partners over the years and go on to amazing lives. These partnerships save lives every single day and are an essential part of helping our shelter continue to save more animals. That is why this hurts so bad. The trust was brutally broken. Thru all of this heartbreak i do not want this tragedy to overshadow the lifesaving work that transfer partnerships make possible every day. But it is a reminder that trust and accountability are everything. When a shelter entrusts a transfer partner with a dog’s life, that trust must be honored. It is unfathomable what Shannon Miranda did. Jennifer Raymond and Jenna Moore deserve more thank yous than i could ever give. Their courage to gather evidence and keep pushing for answers helped expose what was happening and move this investigation forward. Because of their determination, the truth is continuing to come to light. My hope is that no other dogs will have to endure the same fate as Kloe, Oliwa and countless others endured. Oliwa and Kloe were never just names on a transfer list. They were girls we seriously loved. Girls who had people cheering them on, creating videos for them, walking them, advocating for them, and celebrating as they boarded what we believed was the beginning of a new chapter. They were fabulous friendly sweet girls. We couldn’t have imagined this would happen. They should have been sharing couches with families, chasing toys, celebrating birthdays, and growing old surrounded by love. Instead, we are mourning the lives they should have had. Rest easy, sweet girls. You will never be forgotten. Thank you to everyone on social media who helped me look for them, who shared all of my videos and their photos.
