In one of the broadcasts, my drawing style was described as “academic coloring.” What do you think my reaction was? Did I start making excuses, trying to prove something, getting angry, or did I just block that person? I didn’t do any of the above. In that broadcast, we were discussing the topic of style and how to find it. I talked about my creative journey and the methods I used to develop my recognizable style in illustrations. And then I get this message… I don’t remember it word for word, but the meaning is clear. The author of this phrase meant that, having a higher education in art and drawing with a focus on composition, I simply color my sketches in the process. Perhaps it seemed to him that my work in color was rather primitive, or maybe something else — I didn’t clarify. But I can say with confidence that the person wanted to assert themselves at my expense, to belittle me and my efforts. Imagine his surprise when I agreed with him and started sincerely saying that that’s exactly what I do. In the end, I liked that phrase so much that I even named our creative chat with friends after it. Now it’s not just an insult anymore, but a local meme. And I openly declare that I’m engaged in academic coloring! Anyway, guys, don’t pay any attention to those who are offended and want to somehow prove their worth by insulting and ridiculing others — those who aren’t just scrolling through social media while sitting on their favorite couch, but are trying, working, and coming up with something new! So, my dear friends, don’t forget to inspire and be inspired! Bye for now! #sketchbook #watercolor
