A giant $5.5 billion train line could be coming to Brooklyn and Queens. This would be the city's first-ever light rail, and it connects the two boroughs without going through Manhattan. So how do they build a new 14-mile train line through these crowded neighborhoods? They aren't carving out a new path. Instead, they're reusing an active freight rail corridor that's been there since 1876, back when passenger trains actually ran on it. So what would this actually mean for getting around? Instead of indirect trips with multiple transfers, the line would connect to 17 subway lines with a full end-to-end ride taking 32 minutes. New renderings also show what the stations could look like, featuring modern glass designs like the proposed New Utrecht Avenue stop. It's still in the design phase and while the MTA says it'll take at least 5 years to build, they've only secured half the budget so far. I'm Laurie Savino, a local realtor here in Brooklyn.
