Surgeons remove the damaged parts of the hip joint and replace them with an artificial socket, stem and ball to restore smoother movement. This procedure is called a Total Hip Replacement. The surgeon first reaches the hip joint and carefully removes the damaged head of the femur. The worn cartilage and bone inside the hip socket are then cleaned away and reshaped. A new metal socket is secured into the pelvis, usually with a durable liner placed inside it. Next a metal stem is inserted into the hollow center of the femur. A new artificial ball is attached to the top of this stem and fitted into the new socket. The surgeon checks the hip for stability, alignment and smooth movement before closing the incision. Rehabilitation then helps strengthen the surrounding muscles and gradually restore walking and mobility.
