Five days after 17-year-old Xavier Nungaray fell to his death, the grief hasn't let up. But neither have the questions. I would have never expected somebody had a tragically like fallen to their death. Xavier's family was too heartbroken to speak with us on camera, but they told us they're trying to understand what happened to their son inside Benjamin Franklin High School. The family says Xavier had been bullied, adding he was afraid to speak up, saying this at a vigil last week. He was scared that he was going to end up getting punished instead of the bullies. So yes, he was bullied. This claim is raising questions for current and former students like Michael Rodriguez, who says he experienced bullying at the school. It could have really been me. I know what it's like kind of like getting picked on and like just kind of like trying to like write it out, you know, to the world's fall off. Adding he didn't speak up for himself then, but is joining the community in speaking up for Xavier now. I feel like we should fight for his justice, for his family's answers. Xavier's family has pointed to videos circulating online showing a physical altercation happened shortly before Xavier went over the railing on the school's fourth floor. The LAPD has not said what led up to the fall, only that an investigation is underway. And we tried to ask LAUSD Superintendent Andres Chait about the case after he appeared at a school event Monday morning. His response, he was not commenting. For Xavier's family and students alike, this is more than a community in mourning. They want to know if Xavier could have been protected. They want to know if more could have been done about the bullying they say he experienced, and they want the district to make sure this doesn't happen to another child. Shouldn't have happened at all. The school district says counselors and support staff are available to help students and staff deal with the loss, but Xavier's family says they need more than counseling. They need answers. They need accountability. They need closure, and they say they need it now.
