“I NO BLACK, AITHIOPIA!” 😂🇪🇹 Okay, jokes aside, let’s talk about the history behind the name Ethiopia. The ancient Greek term Aithiopia was used in connection with regions and peoples south of Egypt, and Greek writers commonly associated Aithiopes with dark-skinned African peoples. There were also occasions when related terminology could be applied more broadly, including to people outside Africa, so the ancient Greek concept shouldn’t simply be equated with the modern racial category of “Black”. But the African association is very real and the name Ethiopia itself comes through this ancient terminology. So if someone from Ethiopia doesn’t personally identify with the modern label “Black”, that’s their choice. I respect that. But let’s not pretend that the historical association between Ethiopia/Aithiopia and Black Africans doesn’t exist. And no, this isn’t me attacking Ethiopia. Ethiopia has an incredibly important place in African history, from its ancient civilisations to its role in Pan-African history and the African Union. I’m just here to make jokes and talk history. 😂🦁🇪🇹 #AfricanHistory #Ethiopia #BlackHistory #comedy #BlackTikTok
