Your stomach can actually push through your diaphragm and move into your chest. This condition, called a hiatal hernia, occurs when part of the stomach slips through the opening where the esophagus passes through the diaphragm. While many people have no symptoms, others experience severe acid reflux, heartburn, and difficulty swallowing. During surgery, the stomach is pulled back into the abdomen, and the enlarged opening is tightened with stitches. Mesh may be added to reinforce the repair. Surgeons may also perform a fundoplication, wrapping part of the stomach around the lower esophagus to help prevent acid reflux.
