Tips to survive corporate in your 20s
As a fintech SE in London
Be strict. Keep records of everything, all communication, incidents, work load. Unfortunately, corporate is a game and you'll likely need evidence for something along the way
It's all political.
What you say, how you say it, when to talk, when to not, who to talk to. Play it safe. Shout about your achievements. A lot of important people you'll meet aren't actually good at their job. But they made the right connections, supported the right people, shouted about their wins loud enough to quiet the workers with actual wins. If this isn't for you, then maybe the job hopping route (move every 1-2 years) is the best way to grow.
Finish your work on the deadline. Not before or after. Completing things quicker only burns you long term, raising expectations, they become unimpressed with your speed as they make this your 'normal'.
Next thing you know, you doing three pieces of work in the time your colleagues did one doesn't matter.
Have lunch late. Makes afternoons go so much quicker
Go to the gym in the morning. Give your goals 100% of your energy, not the other way around. You're tired and stressed after work giving 50% in the gym long term will have a mental impact.
You gotta make friends. Like I said, it's a game, usually the promoted aren't the best but they are the closest. And it makes days go quicker if you enjoy who you work with.
