Testing one AI app a week: Granola AI. And this week we're testing Granola. Granola is an AI powered note taking app where you can open it up like a notepad, start typing your notes, and it will also record audio in the background. At the end of the meeting, it can go back, take the audio, and enhance your notes. I've actually been a consistent user of Granola over the past three months. In addition to meetings, I actually found two fun ways to use it. No. 1 is in tech conferences. I actually used Granola when I was at the Silicon Valley Tech Conference last month. Because there was so much information being given out whether it's a talk, a keynote, a pitch, or a startup, I found it really hard to concentrate and listen to the context while typing comprehensive notes. So I fired up Granola to help me take notes at the conference. And the second way is I actually used it when I was traveling in Xi'an in October. I was asking a local cab driver about food recommendations and he started ramming off all these stores and dishes and what's good and what's even better. I had a really hard time typing these names out because I've never heard of them and so I opened up Granola to help me take notes while I was scrambling to type out all these recommendations and it captured all the details I wanted. So as usual here are my top three things that I like and three things I don't like about Granola. Number one is I like that it's very simple and non invasive to use. You don't have to integrate it into any meetings, you don't have to do anything in advance, you can just fire it up on your phone very quickly. I listened to their CEO interview before, I know this was done by design and I really like that differentiation. No. 2 is that I can use my camera to take photos and videos while I'm taking notes on Granola. This might not seem like a big deal, but a lot of apps that are recording things in the background, whether it's audio or video, will block me from using my camera on my phone while I'm using the other app. I was very glad to see that I was able to use my camera at the tech conference taking videos and photos of things while I was taking notes. And No. 3 is I found that Granola is very helpful for fields that I'm not familiar with. I used to be a consultant and learned how to take court style notes as well as summary style notes very early on in my career, but this is usually very hard when I'm jumping into a new domain or a new field where there's a lot of acronyms, a lot of pronouns, a lot of things that I've never seen before and didn't really know how they were spelled and what they meant. Granola has a lot more context as an AI agent than I do, it's able to pull a lot more knowledge and pinpoint those words more accurately. Now things I don't like about it. No. 1 is I couldn't see my previous notes while I'm taking a new set of notes. Sometimes I'm trying to refer to notes and look at my history, but apparently I wasn't able to do that. I don't know if that's something they'll want to fix in the next version. And related to that, sometimes my timer and my recording freezes when I exit and come back. Hopefully that's a bug that can be fixed in the future. Second of all, I couldn't use Granola with my headphones on. Granola essentially picks up audio from the environment, so when I put my headphones on in a meeting or during a call, I couldn't use Granola. Hopefully there's a workaround for this in the future as well. And lastly I found content wise it has happened a couple times where Granola wiped out the notes that I took then replaced it completely with the notes that it took instead of enhancing my notes. I haven't figured out what the setting is for it to not do that. The silver lining is that I can still go back and see my previous notes in their environment, but what I really wanted was enhanced notes instead of a whole new set of notes. All in all I've been really happy with using Granola and that's why I've been using it consistently over the past three months. I can't believe this app is still free and at some point they probably need to start charging people. But if I had to rate them, I would give them a very high 4.5/5.
