testing one AI app a week and this week we are testing: Origin so Origin is an AI powered budgeting and investment app The way I got to know about this app is it kept advertising on my Instagram page and it bombarded me with so many advertisements that at one point I just caved and I think one thing that really worked is they advertised $1 per year as a trial and after that it goes back to the $99 dollars as usual and the way I use it is mostly to track expenses I don't really use it for investing because I don't think an AI should be helping me to invest I need to learn that myself and I also use it to track my percentage split of my expenses of what categories they are where my dollar is flowing I don't have all my accounts connected though I only have one bank account and two cards connected on there so that I can see my expenses again it's not meant for my investments and it's not for an overall view of my assets and so the way I use it a lot is I use it to track like how much did I spend on Black Friday and like how much did I spend on vibe coding overall and averages I use it to search up certain transactions like oh did I pay this or how much was that again and that's much easier to do than in an actual bank app here are three things I like and don't like about it No. 1 I like the UX and UI a lot I've used a lot of these apps actually I think that all the bank apps are very basic and I don't really like their interfaces but things like wealthsimple and Robinhood are also in the same suite of consumer banking investment apps and they all have pretty nice UX and UI but origin I think really tops that there's a lot of information on that page and they did a really good job into making them comfortable and pretty and very breathable so I like that a lot second thing is I like that I can make rules on there I think I used something called Mint back in the days and I had to manually change a lot of my expense categories that was very hard to use but with origin I'm able to make a rule for like this vendor and this expense is always going to be categorized as that's something they can remember forever and I also like using it to search up an expense or tally up like how did I know I spent $601 on vibe coding so far well I did that through things I don't like about a No. 1 the AI summaries don't really give me insights they're just descriptive so anybody who can read a chart and tell me like you spent how much money in the past seven days and the main category is this and the spike is that I don't particularly find them insightful so the AI portion I'm not really sure about the value of that yet No.2 is they tried to get too much information from me from the start like I'm just testing this app out and on my sign up page its asking me for my legal name legal status and all these credentials I think that's getting a little bit too much I can see where they're getting at like if you were going to invest through this app you probably need to fill those in I was just getting started with some expenses stuff and they don't need to give them that information so I didn't really provide my real name and then last thing I didn't really like is the time lag this might be not an origin problem it could be a thing with other apps too but when an expense shows up on my bank app or my card it takes a few hours for it to show up on my origin account and I think that's because of some data loading transfer refresh thing but it makes it inconvenient for me to like search up or tally up things sometimes so I don't really like that and don't know if there's a way to fix it so all in all I've been using this for two weeks I actually have been using it quite a lot more than I thought I would I spent 45 minutes on it this week and like five hours on it last week I don't know how maybe that's maybe I just had it left open so if I had to rate this I would give it a 3 out of 5 stars I would say if it kept being the dollar per year thing I would keep using it if it went back to $99 dollars I probably wouldn't be using it anymore
