Starbucks is not competing with Dunkin Donuts. It is competing with your local neighborhood coffee shop. Starbucks's new CEO comes from Chipotle and he was able to turn Chipotle around. Now he's at Starbucks and his job is to turn things around. In the past few years, Starbucks went from the place that all of us would study and hang out in and it truly felt like a third place, at least from when I was in high school. And now I really only go to Starbucks if I'm at the airport or if I'm on a road trip. I cannot tell you the last time I just willingly went to Starbucks to sit down and meet a friend. But the new CEO wants that to happen. He wants Starbucks to feel like a local coffee shop. He's actually calling what he's doing back to Starbucks and here's how he's planning on doing it. Starbucks started relying really heavily on their mobile app and mobile orders and drive throughs. They've even opened up Starbucks's that are solely mobile orders pickup centers. So he's coming in serving two customers. The mobile order just want convenience customer and the in house customer who is going up to the barista and ordering. He mentioned that people that want convenience still want convenience at a place with good vibes. Meaning if you're gonna go and you're gonna get out of your car and you're gonna pick up a Starbucks, even if you want it quickly, you still want it from a place that feels like it has soul. Because his goal is to take people back to Starbucks when it used to be that third place where people get to know the baristas, the baristas know their order and know their name. He wants Starbucks to start greeting people again and just have a more welcoming environment and he wants Starbucks to be the defining customer service company in the world. I don't immediately think of customer service when I think of Starbucks. So how is he actually getting this done? He's gonna start giving ownership back to individual stores, meaning individual managers can have more autonomy on what do they need to order, how much inventory do they need, versus before him everything came from corporate. And in a world full of efficiency AI robots, he actually wants people to be the center of Starbucks. He wants to see the espresso pulled and the milk steamed from an actual human being where you can see a huge shift where before he came in, Starbucks was all about automation, get in get out and order as many things as quickly as possible.
