Have you guys ever noticed that rich people rarely ever talk about going to the emergency room? That's not an accident. The ER is designed for emergencies, strokes, traumas, heart attacks. But for a lot of people, it's also where they go when they can't access any care anywhere else. But wealthy people have something that most people don't: immediate access, same-day appointments, direct physician phone numbers, concierge care, specialists who can see them quickly. Wealthy people are also catching problems earlier. They're getting labs more often, they're getting imaging more often. And if you're wealthy, a lot of the time, issues get caught before they become emergencies. And then even when something does go wrong, oftentimes their physicians will be able to arrange for like direct admission, which means they're bypassing the ER entirely. No waiting room required. So wealthy people are not healthier by nature. The system responds differently to what you can afford and how fast you can get it. And what that tells us is if we want better health outcomes for the general population, access has to start way before the ER.
