NASA just completed the first AI-planned drives on another planet. On December 8th and 10th, the Perseverance rover navigated the Martian surface using routes generated entirely by Claude, Anthropic's AI. No human route planners. The AI analyzed orbital satellite imagery, identified hazards like boulder fields and sand ripples, and created waypoints just like a human driver would. Engineers verified over 500,000 telemetry variables through a digital twin before sending the commands to Mars. Both drives were successful. This is a glimpse of how we explore deeper into space. Mars is 140 million miles away with a 20-minute communication delay. You cannot drive a rover in real time. For 28 years, humans have manually planned every route. But as missions push further from Earth, AI becomes essential. When commands take hours or even days to arrive, spacecraft need to think for themselves. NASA just proved that is possible. #nasa #spacetech #anthropic #ainews #technews
