Robotics is made up of three engineering fields. Mechanical, electrical, software. While all have their own challenges, electrical engineering, I feel like the most intimidating because it requires you to understand signals, circuits and design your own hardware. At one point, you might even have to design one of these, a PCB. Still, it doesn't have to be that sound. A PCB is a printed circuit board which allows you to design custom circuits whatever things you may need. Making things more efficient, and way more compact. Because in the long run, this won't be the first question is, do you need a PCB? I need a PCB for my custom drone, or more accurately, I need a buck converter. Anywhere from 2 to 6S lipos, down to a stable 5 volts for my microcontroller. So let's hop into Flux and build one. Step 1: Find the blueprint. First thing I do is pull up the data sheet to my buck converter and scroll down to the reference schematic. Basically, the blueprint that tells you exactly which parts you need and how to wire them to get the right output. Step 2: Build the schematic. Going into Flux, everything schematic and started connections. Now, here's where Flux comes in clutch. It has built in AI that checks your schematic as you built. So you can ask questions like, does this connection make sense? Did I pick out having an experienced engineer right next to you? Except doing this at home. Step 3: Layout and routing. Once the schematic is done, I place all onto the board, moving things around so they fit, and run an electronic rule check, making sure I'm not breaking any fundamental electronics. Now for routing. This is super important, especially for power lines, too thin and you can choke your power input, which browns out your components. Luckily, Flux has an auto router that handles most of the hard work, leaving me more time to go over it and double check that nothing's off. And just like that, we're done. Now, I can swap out this chunky boy that's been living inside my drone for way too long.
