Anthropic just announced the most powerful AI model that they've ever built, to release it to the public. And here's why. The new model is called Claude Mythos preview, and according to the company, it is so powerful that they will not be releasing it publicly. Instead, they launch something called Project Glasswing, a cyber security coalition with companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Nvidia and the Linux Foundation. They're doing this because this model is extremely good at finding software vulnerabilities. During testing, it found thousands of high severity security across major operating systems and web browsers. Some of these bugs were decades old, never been found before. And in some cases, the AI didn't just find the bug, it built a working exploit for it automatically. Engineers reportedly asked the model to search for vulnerabilities overnight, and they woke up to fully working exploit code. Because of how powerful this model is, Anthropic had to make a controversial decision. Instead of releasing the model publicly, they're giving early access to select companies so that they can patch critical infrastructure before attackers get tools like this. They've even committed $100 million in usage credits for Mythos Preview across these efforts, as well as $4M in direct donations to open-source security organizations. AI is becoming more popular and powerful than ever before. But this raises a big question. If AI becomes powerful enough to outperform human security, who should actually control access to that intelligence? I have a feeling that the next generation of AI won't just be able to write code, but it'll be able to easily break it. And that is a big concern.
