I'm a proud nepo baby. I've told a few times now, my dad grew up incredibly poor in Lebanon where he left during the civil war to pursue a higher education in the United States. He got a PhD in electrical engineering, spent an entire career in the United States in academia, and recently moved back to Lebanon to be the president of Lebanese American University. I recently got back from Washington DC where I was representing NVIDIA at the SC23 AI Expo, explaining to policymakers, think tankers on why open source is strategic for America. Coincidentally, on Saturday, my dad was also in DC from Lebanon talking to LAU alumni. And I got to hear a bunch of people from LAU talk about how grateful they are that my dad is now the president. And I was able to talk about my accomplishments of joining an AI startup as a founding engineer and ultimately growing it to getting acquired by NVIDIA. And yeah, I'm not gonna shy away from the fact that it feels great to have a bunch of people talk about how awesome you and your dad are. I did not grow up insanely rich. My parents have never gotten me into a school or have gotten me a job. But I did grow up in a stable, middle-class household in Albuquerque with an incredibly hardworking and loving mom and dad. I talk openly and honestly about how privileged I am. But if you think everything was just handed to me, how about my dad? Left a war-torn country with nothing and built what he did. Isn't that what it's all about anyways? Giving your kids a better life than you had. If that's the case, then not only am I a nepo baby, I'm gonna work my ass off to make sure my kids are even more of a nepo baby. My parents have never gotten me into a school or have gotten me a job.
