If you have money in a stocks and shares ISA, the government are going to tax it. Rachel Reeves is now considering a 22% tax on the interest earned from uninvested cash that's held in a stocks and shares ISA. And if it does go ahead, it could come into effect from April 2027. But just to clarify, this tax would not apply to interest earned from money that's invested into things like stocks and ETFs. This comes alongside the cash ISA allowance being cut to 12,000 pounds, all with the aim of encouraging more people to actually invest their money instead of leaving it in cash. And I'm fully on board with that, but I just think that changes like this just actively discourage people from investing, because it feels like the government can just change the rules and move the goalposts whenever they like. And it does make you wonder, if the government are willing to tax interest on cash, at what point do they start taxing interest on stocks and shares? This is all we know for now, but if you have any questions, let me know.
