Homelab setup Part 2 TIME TO SET LAB MACHINE! MAKE SURE THAT THE POWER SOURCE AND THE ETHERNET CABLE ARE CONNECTED TO THE MACHINE. THEN PLUG IN THE USB AND TURN ON THE MACHINE. (Check comments for the boot menu button on your machine) BOOT MENU BUTTON REPEATEDLY ON THE LOGO SCREEN UNTIL YOU SEE THE BOOT MENU, THEN SELECT THE USB, THE PROXMOX LOGO, SELECT GRAPHICAL INSTALLATION. AND NOW WE GO THROUGH THE INSTALLER. NOW, MOST OF (AND I CAN GET AWAY WITH KEEPING EVERYTHING AS DEFAULT IN THIS INSTALLER, BUT (AND THIS IS A HUGE BUT) I DO SUGGEST YOU TAKE YOUR TIME GETTING FAMILIAR WITH THE VOCABULARY HERE. FOR EXAMPLE, ON THIS STEP UP YOUR HARD DISCS TO USE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FILE SYSTEMS. FOR MOST OF YOU, WITH JUST ONE DISC, THE DEFAULT EXT4 WILL WORK JUST FINE. YOU ALSO HAVE TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH HOW NETWORKING WORKS WITH YOUR INTERNET ROUTER ON THIS STEP. THIS IS AN INVALID HOSNAME >>> IF PROXMOX GIVES YOU A VALID HOST NAME, THEN THE DEFAULT SHOULD BE ENOUGH HERE. OF COURSE, I'LL MAKE VIDEOS ON BOTH OF THESE TOPICS LATER. REGARDLESS, REMEMBER TO GIVE YOUR INSTALLER YOUR CORRECT TIME ZONE, EMAIL AND A PASSWORD YOU WILL REMEMBER LATER. ONCE EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD, CLICK INSTALL. THIS USUALLY TAKES A REALLY LONG TIME, SO GRAB A MEAL OR SOMETHING. ONCE IT'S DONE, REMOVE THE USB YOU TO REBOOT INTO YOUR FRESHLY INSTALLED PROXMOX VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT ONCE YOU GET TO THIS SCREEN, IT'S TIME FOR THE MOMENT OF TRUTH. GO BACK TO YOUR COMPUTER AND SEARCH FOR THE URL YOUR HOME LAB MACHINE TELLS YOU TO GO TO. ALSO IGNORE YOUR BROWSER SECURITY WARNING. YOU'LL BE FINE. IF YOU SEE YOUR PROXMOX WEBSITE, THAT MEANS EVERYTHING WORKS. MAKE SURE YOU'RE ABLE TO LOG IN WITH THE USERNAME AS ROOT AND PASSWORD AS THE PASSWORD I TOLD YOU TO REMEMBER. CONGRATULATIONS, YOU JUST INSTALLED A HOME LAB.

Time to set up your home lab machine! Make sure that the power source and the ethernet cable are connected to the machine. Then plug in the USB and turn on the machine. Boot menu button repeatedly on the logo screen until you see the boot menu, then select the USB. Once you see the Proxmox logo, select graphical installation. And now we go through the installer. Now, most of (and I can get away with keeping everything as default in this installer, but (and this is a huge but) I do suggest you take your time getting familiar with the vocabulary here. For example, on this step, you can set up your hard discs to use different types of file systems. For most of you, with just one disc, the default EXT4 will work just fine. You also have to become familiar with how networking works with your internet router on this step. This is an invalid hostname. If Proxmox gives you a valid hostname, then the default should be enough here. Of course, I'll make videos on both of these topics later. Regardless, remember to give your installer your correct time zone, email and a password you will remember later. Once everything looks good, click install. This usually takes a really long time, so grab a meal or something. Once it's done, remove the USB you to reboot into your freshly installed Proxmox virtual environment. Once you get to this screen, it's time for the moment of truth. Go back to your computer and search for the URL your home lab machine tells you to go to. Also ignore your browser security warning. You'll be fine. If you see your Proxmox website, that means everything works. Make sure you're able to log in with the username as root and password as the password I told you to remember. Congratulations, you just installed a home lab.
