I saved 100K in 2 years and here are the three money saving rules I live by. First, I don't drink when I'm eating and I don't eat when I'm drinking. When I go to restaurants, I'll just have my meal with water. Cocktails and drinks can get really expensive, sometimes as expensive as food, and it's healthier to drink water anyways. And if I'm meeting someone at a bar, I'll just have drinks without food or bar snacks. Number two might be surprising, but I don't go shopping or to the mall to browse. When I need something specific, I'll just go and pick that item up. I'm never shopping for fun, to look around or to kill time, and this makes sure that I didn't buy things that I didn't need or planned on. Third, I don't have a car and I don't drive. Car payments, insurance, gas, all of that gets really expensive. I live in a pretty walkable area, so I walk everywhere or take the bus or the subway. So on average, I end up spending around $75 on transportation every month.
