Here are four books that each made me love and enjoy life more and I'll tell you how. The first one and a book I literally never stop talking about is East of Eden by John Steinbeck. The reason it's one of my favorite books of all time is that through this book I learned so clearly that moral determinism doesn't have to be something you ever believe in. You're never doomed to be any type of way that you don't wanna be. It taught me that people can always change and that anytime you think you're just doomed to being one way that you don't like or that doesn't serve you, if you think you're destined to be angry or insecure or you know to hurt people you love or something like that, this book so beautifully shows through the story that we have the power to choose who we are and how we show up in this world and it's just the most beautiful story and so gorgeously told in the philosophical message that Steinbeck conveys. The second one is White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky, a very very short book that I love because it so beautifully captures the nature of existentialism and of the fact that you can create your own meaning in life based on experiences that give your life meaning without them needing to be forever. This book basically shows that some moments in life and some experiences can be so beautiful and rewarding that they're enough to fuel you with meaning for a lifetime. Number three is Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman by Richard Feynman and I absolutely love this book which is the biography of Richard Feynman, the Nobel Prize winning physicist. This is a book that always motivates me to enjoy life and follow my curiosity and my childlike whimsy because that is exactly how Richard Feynman lived his life. And being a Nobel Prize winning physicist is almost the least interesting thing about him. When you read this book and you see all of the side quests that he went on and the curiosity with which he approached life and the way that he weaved his multiple passions into his every day, it's such a refreshing way to live. And finally we've got Just Kids by Patti Smith which I just finished reading and I find that memoirs like this make me enjoy my everyday life more because the way that the authors write the mundane moments that made up their life, the way that every detail is so beautifully written and the way small moments in time are captured but made to seem so vivid and beautiful. It makes you feel like when you're in your own mundane everyday life, you can look at all the small details you would typically overlook and see them as things that would one day be in your own memoir. I just find memoirs like this that are written so beautifully make you appreciate your own everyday mundane moments a lot more.
