I think a lot of engineers like myself are so analytical that we accidentally try to debug uncertainty in real life situations when that line of thinking only applies to software engineering. In computer science and in college, we are usually taught to eliminate ambiguity as much as possible and if there is ambiguity, it should be predictable. Meaning the more analysis we do, we know we can eventually reach a conclusion. In your code, you build out edge cases, you think of every single possible scenario and you build your system around that. But when you start to apply this analytical mindset to human dynamics and social situations, it becomes an unsolvable problem. This might seem obvious, but when you are in a social situation, human behavior is so dynamic and so fluid that it is hard to pinpoint an exact reason why someone acts a certain way. So unintentionally, I was beginning to look at people as distributed systems, like what is the spec for this relationship, for this person? I keep looking for edge cases in people to kind of map back to a reason why they act that way, so it is like linear, but it is so non-linear, it is so random. So I find myself constantly running simulations of what can happen in the future with a certain person and situation, and it is exhausting because only one of them will be true, maybe none of them. So I think this type of overthinking where you try to model what is going to happen in the future is extremely harmful to your mind. It causes extreme anxiety and also makes you project a false reality onto what is going to happen next. There is no possible way you can predict how someone is going to act, how a situation will turn out, if it is out of your control. The only way to know is to live through it. We are not computer systems.
