Here are the top five financial moves to make after having a baby. Number one is probably the most important one. You want to add your baby to your health insurance plan. You have about 30 days to do this, so don't miss this window, or you'll have to wait until open enrollment. Two, claim the child tax credit. You get up to $2,000 per child, and what's nice about this is it reduces what you owe and not just your taxable income. Three, use a dependent care flexible spending account. You want to use it through your employer to pay for childcare, and on top of this, this is pre-tax money, so it can allow you to save up to $5,000 per year. Four is probably another important one, you want to increase your emergency fund. You want to make sure it's at least six months because kids mean more unexpected costs. And lastly, five, you want to open a 530A account. Did you know that kids born between the year of 2025 to 2028 get a free $1,000 deposit from the government? What you have to do is you want to open the account, get the free $1,000, but just don't add any more money to the account and let the money grow.
