I just bought my first car. I own it! Yeah, mostly. Well, I have the key. I pay the bill. I own the car. Not the data. What data? It's a new car, right? So then it can track your speed, acceleration, how hard you brake, even what time of day you drive. And that data could be sold or shared and used to raise your insurance rates. It's always data with you. It's always data. So... do I just accept that? Nope. This is where you hack back. Step one: Request your consumer disclosure report from LexisNexis. If you see a lot of driving data on there, that's probably why your rates are high. Step two: Go through your car's privacy settings and turn off 'Smart Driver', 'Driver's Score', or 'Usage-Based Insurance'. Unless you signed up for that program! And personally, I avoid the car apps unless I absolutely need them.
