There's a truth that artists, songwriters, creators of all kinds know all too well but repeatedly need to be reminded of. Orpheus's journey in Hadestown reveals it. And if you don't know anything about Hadestown, don't worry, I'm going to break it down for you. Orpheus, as he is repeatedly told, is a poor boy working on a song. The song is clearly his life's work. He's been working on it for a long time and it's still not finished. And because it's not finished, he doesn't want to play it. Does that remind you of anything? Eurydice challenges him to sing it if he wants to take her home. With the stakes being raised, he sings it. He wants to sing the song to bring back spring. And although it doesn't do it right away, it does bring a flower to life. And when Eurydice is over, throughout the musical, different parts of the song come to him through him loving, loving and losing, by from Hermes's guidance, from losing Eurydice once and then forever, and from standing up to oppressive systems. Creation is in the living, it's not in the isolation. It's in the process, being vulnerable, getting hurt, and finding joy beyond your wildest dreams. Revelations.
