cognitive debt is what you accumulate every time you let a tool do your thinking for you instead of doing it yourself. it works a bit like financial debt. each time you reach for AI to summarize a thing you should have read or to draft the argument you should have reasoned through, you get the short term win. the task is done faster, but you've borrowed against your own capability. and this loan comes with an interest. and the interest is that skill quietly will die out. the muscle that you didn't use will get weaker. there's early research suggesting that people who lean heavily on AI show less brain engagement and remember less of their own work afterwards. you produce something, but you didn't build anything in yourself. and as always I'm not anti tool. I use these different tools to help me constantly. but you have to use it as a way to extend the thinking that you've already done and not to skip the thinking entirely. otherwise you wake up fluent in prompting something and unable to actually reason. and that's the debt that will compound ruthlessly.
