The haircare industry has turned bond repair into a catch-all marketing term, but from a chemistry standpoint, there are some important distinctions. When I think of true bond repair, I’m looking at technologies designed to address disulfide bond damage—the strongest bonds in the hair fiber and the bonds most impacted by bleaching, coloring, relaxers, and other chemical services. That’s why brands like @Olaplex, @K18 Hair, @Living Proof, Inc., and @epres land firmly in my “worth it” category. Now before the comments start: protein is not the enemy. Protein-based products can improve strength, reduce breakage, temporarily patch damaged areas, and make hair feel healthier. But protein and bond repair are not the same thing. They serve different purposes and should be evaluated accordingly. The same goes for products focused primarily on hydrogen bonds and ionic bonds. They can absolutely improve conditioning, manageability, and styling performance—but I don’t consider them equivalent to technologies designed to address structural damage within the hair fiber. Healthy hair isn’t about finding one miracle product. It’s about understanding what a product is actually designed to do.
