Rules have changed a lot over the years. My husband was in the academy back in 2021. There was seven people in his class and there was only seven options of where to go. So each person had one option. And the options were Hawaii, Alaska, California, Arizona, which is how we ended up here. We have not been very fond of the Northeast. It's cold and it's expensive here. And if you're wondering why we haven't moved back yet, well, it's not that easy. The transfer process in air traffic control is, like, so, like, such a hidden process. He got certified back in 2022 and as soon as he passed, he technically could have put paperwork into transfer that, how that transfer worked back then at least, you can be picked up in a month or you can be picked up in 10 years. There is literally no timeline for release. It's mainly dependent on two factors. One, can your facility release you? Is there enough staffing where you're at? And two, will that other facility take you? Are they in need of people there? And usually the answer for at least one of those is no. So we decided to settle down here and commit to three to five years of living here. We bought a house and we're like, okay, we're going to sit here for a little bit. Well, now we're four of that three to five timeline. We haven't been patient. We actually put paperwork in back in 2024 to get out of here. So how has the FAA screwed them again? Well, they announced a couple days ago that they were changing the rules on how everyone hop on this Zoom call. To be fair to them, there are positives and negatives of the Zoom call, but I'm going to start with the negatives. Used to, when you got that phone call that you got picked up, you had about a year, up to a year to leave, which gives you plenty of time to sell your house, get your kids out of school, your partner leave their job, etc. But now they're trying to make it easier and quicker. So when you get that phone call, you have six to 12 weeks to report to your new facility. And they offer no relocation assistance. And they're framing it as like, this is such a positive, like, y'all can just get there quicker. Personally, I have my own job. Like I said, we have a house, we have a dog. We don't have kids, but I can't imagine also having kids. And you have to uproot your entire life and you get that call in six to 12 weeks. We were hopeful that we could get out of Connecticut and actually soon. You can get out soon, but they still haven't opened up most of the facilities. Houston Intercontinental Airport did not open their doors. Atlanta did, and they're offering a 30k sign-on bonus to go there. But I just don't like Atlanta. Another positive is that before it was kind of this unwritten rule of who got picked up, so they ranked them based on, like, seniority. And so the people that have been at their facility or been in the program the longest, they get chosen first, which is good. But before they deem most facilities understaffed and with the rules they changed, basically a lot of them are now fully staffed. They changed like how the numbers work. Long story short, we were really hoping that we could get out of Connecticut and actually soon.
