Every application we have to write in for Amoeba is basically a shell, either a shell script or a C program. And I found that there were downsides to either of those. I thought, well, I wish there was a third language that was sort of in the middle of those that felt more like a genuine programming language. I thought, hmm, I can build my own. Building an interpreter is gonna take me two or three months, and I'll win that time back by increased productivity,

Guido van Rossum didn’t create Python because he wanted to revolutionize software. He created it because he was frustrated. While working on a distributed operating system called Amoeba in the late 1980s, Guido felt programmers were stuck choosing between two bad options. Shell scripts were easy to write but limited. C was powerful but cumbersome. He wanted something in the middle: simple, readable, and powerful enough to get real work done. His solution? Build his own language. He thought it would take two or three months. That side project became Python.
