My payday routine that helps me save 40% of my income as a frugal girl living in Chicago. Before I even see my paycheck, I have quite a few deductions that are automatically taken out so I don't even have to think about saving. For context, I get paid semi-monthly and each paycheck is about $4500. First, pre-tax stuff. $1100 goes to my 401K, then $158 to my HSA, $58 to health insurance, $12 to dental and $3 to vision. Then taxes hit about $1200 per paycheck goes to federal, state and FICA. After taxes, I have $224 that goes to my employer stock purchase plan. So after all those deductions, I have about $1600 left from this one paycheck and here's where it goes. $300 goes straight to my brokerage account that gets invested in index funds like Vanguard. The remaining $1300 goes to my HYSA. I then use my HSA for my rent and my credit card bill that I pay in full. This happens twice per month since I get two paychecks every month. Most of my wealth building is happening before I even get the money. Pro tip: automate as much as you can when it comes to your finances! My 401k, my HSA and my Roth IRA are all maxed. For me, this has been the key to building wealth and saving as much as I do. I think salary transparency is so important, so follow for more budget breakdowns.
