Hot take: don't use upwork or fiverr to land consulting clients. How do you feel about using Upwork or Fiverr to land consulting projects? That's a question I got in today's office hours. For context, I'm an operations consultant. I built my business over the last four years and I also help other people build theirs. So if that's something you're thinking of doing, you found the right page. I've got mixed feelings about them. Benefits are you get to see what companies are looking for and how they talk about their problems in job descriptions. The problem though, is a lot of people are applying to those, so it can be a race to the bottom for who's going to charge the least to land the job. In my experience over the last four years, consulting is so relationship-based. I'm not saying don't use the platforms, I'm just saying let it not be the only thing you do. Not to mention that those, more smaller scoped projects, whereas a lot of consultants, like myself, we're charging five, six figures for projects and engagements. And companies aren't posting that those are more relationship-based.
