Before inventing Ethernet, Robert Metcalfe was a graduate student helping connect computers to ARPANET, the network that eventually evolved into today’s Internet. While studying at Harvard, he proposed building the interface that would connect the university’s computers to the growing network—but Harvard believed the project was too important for a graduate student and gave the work to Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN), the company building much of the early ARPANET infrastructure. Ironically, BBN then hired another graduate student to do the job. Metcalfe eventually left for MIT’s Project MAC, where he continued working on computer networking before joining Xerox PARC. There, he invented Ethernet, the networking technology that still powers homes, offices, schools, universities, and data centers around the world more than 50 years later.
