Maybe it's time we stop hanging American flags. And now before you hang me, I would like for you to hear me out. I've recently noticed that the number of American flags hanging outside of people's windows has kind of skyrocketed. It's your home, you're allowed to do what you want, and at the same time, the second you put a symbol out in public, you lose control over what it means to everyone else. Like it or not, for many people, the American flag has become associated with a kind of nationalism and certain scans in politics. And honestly, bodily safety, especially for people of color and for women. Black and brown people go missing every single day at the hands of people who also claim to love America. And before you say no one can be nationalist these days, I'm not saying that you can't hang your flag. I'm just saying that you should know by hanging your flag, you're communicating something certain about yourself. And if you don't want to communicate that and if you care about the way that your actions impact other people, you should add flags to that. A BLM flag, a pride flag, something to show that you support women's rights, maybe all three. However, if you continue to hang the this flag with no other for lack of a better word. I fear I have no choice but to conclude that you either A are not a safe person to be around or B do not care how your actions impact the community that you are part of. And in either case that tells me everything that I need to know.
