Hey y'all, my name is Shana and I'm a nursing instructor and I'm doing a series on preparing for nursing school. This is video number two and we're going to be talking about 10 things that you should do before you start nursing school. So let's get into it. Number one is going to be organize your life. Buy planner, write everything in it that you're going to have to do from now until the end of the semester. Um, when you get your syllabi and things, you will add to that based off your assignments, but go ahead and organize your life as it is now so that you can wrap your head around everything that you're going to be having to do during nursing school. Okay? That way you can time manage appropriately. Um, go ahead and do your big things now. Like if you got to do some kind of major thing that's going to be stressful, like, um, if you got to move, sell your car, I don't know, whatever it is, do it now if you can help it. And that way you won't have to worry about that during the semester. Um, number two is going to be review basic AMP and medical terminology. I'm going to be doing videos on that coming up, but basically you're going to be reviewing your major body systems from AMP and then medical terminology. I'll give you a few hints on what is the most important terminology to know for nursing school because it's a lot. Um, but I will try to narrow that focus a little bit for you in my video on that. Number three is going to be start learning dosage calculations. Okay? I'm going to be doing videos on that as well, but what you can do now is go ahead and reach out to your nursing college and see if there is a specific method that they require you to use in nursing school because some places require you to use a certain method. There's dimensional analysis, ratio proportion, um, so just reach out and make sure you know which one you're supposed to use. Number four is figure out your learning style. Okay? This is so important for your studying. So there's some quizzes online you can take. I'm going to be doing a video on how to figure out your learning style, but you need to know that before you start nursing school. Number five is buy and organize your supplies. Go ahead and do that now. Do not wait until the last minute, paying for overnight shipping, all this stuff adding stress on to the beginning of your semester. There is no syllabus week in nursing school. You need everything for day one. Okay? So go ahead and get that out of the way and get everything organized. Number six is set realistic expectations. Nursing school is stressful and it is hard. Okay? A lot of times we put pressure on ourselves to be the best, you know, to do, you know, be the top of the class, make all A's, do all these things. Um, and still be successful in all other aspects of our life. And sometimes that's just not realistic. So let's just focus on getting through it, not burning out and learning how to be a good nurse. Okay? Number seven is start building healthy habits. This is probably one of my favorite ones and I promise this helped me through nursing school so much. Um, sleep, eating, exercise, and how you deal with stress. Okay? Get started sleeping. You cannot function off a couple hours of sleep. So go ahead and make sure you're eating to fuel your body and exercise. I'm not saying you have to be some kind of fitness model. I'm just saying move your body a little bit, walk, do some pilates, whatever makes you happy, but do something to move your body. Um, and how you deal with stress. Nursing school is stressful, very stressful sometimes. So if you know that you cope with stress in a negative way, start making intentional changes to try to cope with stress in a positive way. Okay? Um, number eight, set up your study space. This can be a fun thing. Right? Like if you have a desk, if you don't, if you have a space that you're going to study in your home, make sure you set it up, get a cute little fake plant or a real plant, whatever you can keep one alive. I can't. So if you can keep one alive, great. Um, so get all your little supplies ready on your desk and just make it like a fun thing for you to set up. Okay? Do not study in your bed. Don't do it. That's not your study space. Set up a different study space that's not your bed. Okay? Um, number nine is talk to people who have been through it before. Go on your Facebook, your TikTok, whoever, and ask for advice, specifically if you're in, if you know somebody that's been through it, talk to them, ask them about the professors. It makes you less anxious when you kind of know what to expect, right? The anxiety of starting nursing school stems from not knowing what to expect. So talk to people. Okay? And number 10, my last one for today, take a deep breath and enjoy your time before you start nursing school. You should be excited, you should not be scared to death, like dreading it. Um, getting into nursing school is such an accomplishment and it should be exciting for you. Okay? So enjoy your time, take a deep breath, spend time with your family and just soak it all in before you start nursing school. Um, so that's it for number two. Tomorrow we are going to be talking about nursing school myths and the realities behind those myths so that we can kind of tamper down some of that anxiety. If you have any specific questions from today or you need anything else, y'all just let me know in the comments. Y'all have a great day.
