Most swimmers know that backstroke and freestyle have a lot in common. Arms going one by one, body rotation, similar kick. So naturally, when they practice drills, they apply the same approach to both strokes. But here's where it goes wrong. 👉 The single arm drill works differently in backstroke than in freestyle. In freestyle, when you keep one arm extended in front of you while the other arm works, it doesn't limit your movement. Your shoulder can still rotate freely. In backstroke it's completely different. ❌ The wrong way. Keeping your non-working arm extended in front of you during the single arm drill locks your shoulder rotation. You physically cannot get your shoulder out of the water properly. And shoulder rotation in backstroke is everything. Without it your pull loses power and the whole stroke falls apart. ✅ The right way. Keep your non-working arm by your side. Not in front. By your side. That one change gives you full control of your shoulder rotation. One shoulder comes out of the water while the other stays in. Which is exactly how backstroke is supposed to work. 💡 Next time you do a single arm drill in backstroke, keep that resting arm by your side and feel the difference immediately. 📲 Download the Swim Success Training app for free, pick your goal, and the app will build a fully personalised training plan for you.
