The LAPD just left its contract with Flock, the license plate surveillance company, and left an entire network of cameras that were across Los Angeles. Flock runs automated plate readers that car goes, data all over. The department killed the deal over civil liberties and privacy concerns, mostly a fight over who actually owns the location data once it's collected. And L.A. isn't the only one. 39 other Flock contracts were terminated in just the first five months alone. And some of them were terminated after cities found federal immigration agents using the cameras to track people in sanctuary cities. Power runs on consent and L.A. just stopped giving it.
