I had 52 research experiences on my ERAS application and I did not go to a research heavy medical school. So before you freak out and say, oh my god, I need like 30 publications, I'm going to tell you exactly how to maximize your research experiences and get the most out of every single project you do. One thing that's really important to understand is that when the NRMP reports that an applicant had 20 to 30 research experiences, that does not mean that they had 20 to 30 research publications. The number is the total combined of every single presentation, abstract, publication. So let's say you have one research project. You can generate like five, six, seven numbers from this one project. Most medical schools have like a research day, you can present it as a poster there. You can also submit that project for poster sessions at local conferences, other local conferences and national conferences. And if one of those conferences publishes an abstract and a peer reviewed journal supplement, that will also count as an abstract. Finally, of course, if you have a full manuscript that gets accepted by a journal and published, that's another one. One research project can yield 5 to 7 numbers. So if you have a few projects floating around there during the summer prior to submitting your ERAS application, get those done, okay? ERAS lets you designate if you have submitted the project, if it's under review or if it's finalized and published. And I'm sure they do this because it can take like months to years for a journal to fully review, accept and publish. So if you have a few, like, floating around that are maybe close, put in the work, get those final projects in so you can get credit for them.
