Holding onto counters just to get around your kitchen? This one exercise fixes that. This one exercise fixes that. Hi, I'm Ryan. I've been training seniors for over a decade. If you want more fitness and mobility tips like this, make sure you follow me. Okay, here's the problem. Most seniors lose confidence moving side to side because they never train lateral stability. In the kitchen, that's where it shows up the most. Tight spaces, lots of turning and reaching and stepping sideways to get around a counter or the sink. So you hold on, not because you have to, but because you're scared that you might lose your balance. So here's the fix: the lateral weight shift. And you do it right there at the counter. So comment balance below if you're gonna try this today. Stand facing your counter, feet hip-width apart, and hands resting lightly on the counter. Now shift all your weight onto your left leg. Lift the right foot off the ground, take it out as wide as it can comfortably go. Feel your weight shift to the right, but try to keep half your weight on the left leg. Then slowly and under control, bring the right foot back to your normal stance. Now do that three or four more times before you switch sides. You may notice that one side feels more difficult. This means you should do twice as many on that harder side for the first few weeks to try to fix that imbalance. After a few weeks, you may not even need to hold onto the counter anymore. When you can do these without the counter, you'll be moving around the kitchen with far more confidence. Make sure you save this so you can come back to it and practice it later. Now here's why this works. A couple weeks ago, I taught you the front weight shift. That one built your front to back stability to move forward and backward with confidence. This one builds your side to side stability, the missing piece that most people ignore. And when you put these two together, you've got 360 degree balance. You can move confidently in pretty much any direction. Now send this to someone who's afraid to move around their kitchen without holding onto the counter. So that's how you stop relying on counters just to get around your kitchen. One simple exercise that builds that lateral stability that you've been missing. Comment balance if you're ready to take back your independence and share this with a senior who needs to see this.
