I lived in Australia for 1 year completely free of charge and here's how I did it. Me and my partner had just finished 7 months travelling around Southeast Asia and we'd run out of money. So we decided we were going to move to Australia, work for a year and then go and do more travelling. We didn't really want to have to pay to rent somewhere, so we decided we were going to do house sitting. I downloaded Trusted House Sitters and I also used Facebook. Trusted House Sitters was really good. It's very competitive though. There's lots of people on there wanting to do house sits, so the chances you're going to get picked sometimes are quite slim. But what I like about it is that you can see the pictures of the house that you're applying for and that's really helpful. Facebook, I joined all of the local Facebook groups, cross-posted on all of them and that was really helpful for finding house sits as well. Also, a lot of the time the owners let you borrow their car. In Australia the car's insured, not the person, so that is also a massive benefit. And I would recommend finding longer house sits, then you don't have to move around as much. So if you're wanting to move to Australia, short term, I would definitely recommend house sitting.
