Apparently sound waves can negatively affect data centers. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? This is not recommended. This is not supported. Do not try this at home. Aah! This is not special effects. This is real. What we're looking at here is the effect of disc vibration. Vibration is a serious issue, and we can see the effect here that it's caused. So here, the latency for the discs that are under the workload has gone up. Here I can see which discs have now had IO operations longer than 500 milliseconds, and I can find out that they belong to the JBOD.

Now, I’m not saying we should all go stand outside a data center and start shouting… but apparently sound waves can negatively affect server performance. Back when data centers relied heavily on spinning hard drives, engineers discovered that vibrations could interfere with disk operations and increase latency. Most people would have tested this with expensive equipment. Engineer Brendan Gregg had a different idea. He walked up to a rack of servers and started screaming. As ridiculous as it sounds, it worked. The sound vibrations affected the hard drives, causing measurable performance drops in real time. What looks like a joke today became one of the most memorable demonstrations of how physical forces can impact computer systems.
