Finding out a debt collector got a default judgment against you is the worst, unless you file this document right away. First, what is a default judgment? It's when a collector sues you, you don't respond in time, and automatically in their favor, the court rules. This means they can garnish your wages or freeze your bank account without you getting to tell your side of the story. But you have a powerful tool to fight back, a motion to vacate default judgment. You're telling the judge, hey, I had a good reason for not responding, and I want my chance to fight this case. You should also file the lawsuit that you would have filed about it. This tells the judge there's a chance you would have won. If the judge grants your motion, the default judgment is wiped. The case goes back to the beginning, and you now have actually the opportunity to fight the lawsuit on its merits.
