By creating the illusion that there's something on your screen, you're instinctively triggered to interact with the content, and then suddenly you're engaged with an ad. Now, sure, the content of the ad itself isn't much to write home about, but that doesn't matter when the ad itself works before it even starts. It's a classic form of rage bait marketing. Similar to using the wrong you're or a fake pause in a video, it plays into your brain's inherent need for order just enough to stop you from scrolling. So, get rage baited, bro.
