QUESTION. Do Oil Additives Make a Difference? This is Restore Engine Restore & Lubricant. It says it can restore compression, horsepower, and reduce oil consumption. This is an E36 M3 with a junkyard LS inside. The motor came out of a GMC Yukon. I have no idea how many miles, but I imagine it's seen better days. Before we put this in, let's get some baseline numbers. This is a compression tester. I'll test four cylinders, average them out, and we'll get a baseline. Now that we've got four plugs removed, we can start putting this into each cylinder, getting a reading, writing it down. Note, I am doing these tests dry with a cold engine. First cylinder, just shy of 150, call it 145. Repeat three more times. About 145. About 140. They are all pretty close, so I'm not even gonna measure for the fourth. For those three cylinders, we get an average compression of 141 lbs. So now let's dump this in. Oops. Spilled a ton. The directions just tell you to shake it and throw it in. So I'm gonna put it back together, take it for a really hard drive. And then tomorrow morning, when the engine is cold like it is now, I'll do another compression test and we'll find out if engine oil additives make a difference. Stay tuned. Follow For Part 2.
