Jony Ive is a design legend. He designed the iPhone, the iPod, the MacBook, the Apple Watches, and he really established that clean aesthetic that is so core to Apple's identity. He has very few select clients, and right now OpenAI is his biggest one. They're trying to build a body for ChatGPT. There are a lot of different theories on why OpenAI wants to get into hardware. Some people think they're trying to create a moat or a differentiator, just in case AI models end up being similar and it'll give people a reason to stick with its tech. Apple is not happy about this that its former design star is working with OpenAI to potentially create a product that will compete with Apple hardware. Apple is suing OpenAI, along with two current OpenAI employees, alleging that the company is stealing Apple's trade secrets to develop the new device. Manufacturing hardware is really difficult. It's not like software where you can just ship an update to change a mistake, you have to lock in the design and manufacture it. In addition, AI hardware is not really a proven category, so inventing something new, and then this lawsuit could force them to do a redesign or even switch manufacturers, which could really hamper their efforts or delay the release.
